Since the turn of the century ROOM40 has operated out of Brisbane, Australia publishing more than 150 editions from artists all over the globe. The label celebrates its 15th anniversary with a series of events worldwide including Openframe Stockholm — three days of radical listening at Fylkingen and Audiorama.
October 15th 19.00
This concert at Audiorama presents a new work specially commissioned for OPENFRAME Stockholm by Australian composer Thembi Soddell. NB: Jim and Thembi will not be present at Audiorama for the presentation of their works.
THEMBI SODDELL (AU) Thembi Soddell is a sound artist and electroacoustic composer from Melbourne, Australia. Her volatile sonic worlds morph, shift, rupture and dis-rupture into filmic atmospheres with a distinctly disquieting edge. Contorted into unreal environments and luscious masses of sonic textures, her sound palate sources field recordings, instruments and electronics to be suggestive but often unidentifiable. Her compositions exploit the dynamic extremes, toying with the listener's sense of expectation by generating anticipatory suspense. The key element underlying her work is the exploration of psychologically and emotionally intense states.
JIM O'ROURKE (JP/USA): Then Right European premiere diffusion by Lawrence English of a new multi-channel work by Jim O'Rourke originally commissioned for the 2015 Openframe Festival in Sydney, Australia.
October 16th 19.00
This Fylkingen concert features label boss Lawrence English delivering one of his immense explorations of the physicality of listening alongside dense, liminal psycho-acoustics from American composer Olivia Block and subtle percussive texture from Andrea Belfi.
October 17th 19.00
This event at Audiorama includes a very rare appearance by Brunhild Ferrari presenting one of her works and a diffusion by Lawrence English of Viento – his masterful collection of recordings from Antartica.
LAWRENCE ENGLISH (AU) Lawrence English is composer, media artist and curator based in Australia. Working across an eclectic array of aesthetic investigations, English’s work prompts questions of field, perception and memory. He investigates the politics of perception, through live performance and installation, to create works that ponder subtle transformations of space and ask audiences to become aware of that which exists at the edge of perception.
BRUNHILD FERRARI (FR) Brunhild Meyer-Ferrari is best known for her long association with French composer Luc Ferrari and was his closest collaborator for more than forty years together realising many important works of musique concrète and electro-acoustic music. Three of her solo works have been issued by the Belgian label Sub Rosa.
